Exploring Nolakhi Kothi Okara – British Colonial Architecture & Hidden History of Okara
A Story of Historical British Era Heritage Nolakhi Kothi Okara
.
Background of construction
The construction of Nolakhi Kothi
was carried out during the British rule when the canal system was being
expanded in Punjab. The British government dug canals on a large scale to make
fertile lands cultivable, built barrages and organized the agricultural system.
Government buildings were constructed at various places for the supervision and
administrative affairs of these projects, including Nolakhi Kothi. It is said
that the building cost nine lakh rupees at that time, which was considered a
huge amount at that time. That is why it was named " Nolakhi Kothi ".
This name alone can be used to gauge the financial scale and governmental
importance of that era.
Architectural Style and
Architecture
The most striking feature of Nolakhi
Kothi is its beautiful architecture. Built of red bricks, this building
presents a beautiful blend of British-era engineering and local architectural
style. The verandas, arched doorways and round pillars around the building give
it a magnificent and dignified look. The pillars of the Nolakhi Kothi are
particularly noteworthy. These thick, strong and rounded pillars not only
support the building but also add to its beauty. The arched doorways and wide
corridors allowed for air circulation during the hot season, which shows the
architectural strategy of that time. The lush green grounds, trees and open
environment surrounding the building provide it with a peaceful and picturesque
view. With the passage of time, some parts have become dilapidated, but despite
this, its grandeur and splendor are still noticeable today.
Literary reference — Ali Akbar Natiq's novel
One of the reasons for the fame
of Nolakhi Kothi is the novel by the famous writer Ali Akbar Natiq, in which
this Nolakhi Kothi is presented as an important backdrop. In this novel, many
fictional characters have been attributed to this building, who create an
interesting story by combining reality and fiction. The mention of a historical
place in the literary world doubles its importance. Natiq's writing introduced Nolakhi
Kothi not only in local but also in literary circles. Through this novel, the
atmosphere, environment and echoes of the past of this building have been
described in a creative way, which makes the reader feel like he is in that
era.
Current condition and importance
Although this building has lost
some of its original condition over time, it still exists today as a historical
heritage. The signs of time on the walls, broken parts and the environment
surrounded by bushes indicate that it needs proper attention and protection. Nolakhi
Kothi was not only a government building but also reflects the administrative
system, agricultural development and colonial policies of that era. Its
presence reminds us of how the British government brought about an agricultural
revolution by establishing a canal system in Punjab, the effects of which can
be felt even today. The main reason for the current dilapidated condition of
the Nawalkhi Kothi is government negligence and lack of proper maintenance.
After the British era, the building was not provided with regular protection,
due to which its walls weakened over time. Weather effects such as rain,
humidity, intense heat and wind damaged the bricks and mortar. The uncontrolled
growth of bushes and trees around also affected the foundations. Due to lack of
awareness at the local level and lack of repair measures, this historical
heritage is gradually falling into decline.
Tourism potential
Nolakhi Kothi, if properly
preserved and restored, can become an excellent tourist destination. There is
no dearth of historical places in and around Okara, but often these places are
neglected due to lack of proper publicity and maintenance. If the Department of
Archaeology or the local administration focuses on the restoration of this
building, installs information boards and arranges for cleanliness, this place
can become an attraction for students, researchers and tourists. This place can
provide a unique experience, especially for people interested in history and
literature.
Cultural and Social Aspects
In My Opinion
Nolakhi Kothi is an important
historical monument of Okara that reflects the canal system and administrative
structure of the British era. Built at a cost of nine lakh rupees, this
building still tells the story of its grandeur. Its unique architectural style,
literary references and historical background give it a special place. There is
a need for us to value our historical heritage and preserve it for future
generations. Nolakhi Kothi is not just a symbol of the past but is a part of
our collective history. If given proper attention, it can become not only a
preserved historical site but also a landmark of Okara. The building still
stands silently today, as if waiting for an audience to tell the stories of its
golden past.
